Water-Quality Sampling and Investigations

With extensive sampling and monitoring equipment, experienced hydrologists and technicians, a moderately equipped laboratory, and access to the complete facilities of the USGS National Water Quality Laboratory, the Water Science Center is able to handle a wide range of water-quality sampling and investigations. Examples of our capabilities include:

  • Water-quality sampling of streams, lakes, aquifers, and rainfall
  • "Clean" (ppb) sampling protocols for trace metals and volatile organic compounds
  • Field water-quality investigations
  • Biological sampling for algae, benthic invertebrates, plants, and fish
  • Sampling, quantification, and characterization of stormwater
  • Computer modeling of flow and solute transport, including determination of waste assimilative capacity
  • Sampling and analyses of bed sediments, including dating and sedimentation rates
  • Long-term water quality trend analysis
  • Quantification of sources of loading to streams and lakes
  • TMDL Studies
