NEW ENGLAND COASTAL BASINS NAWQA PROGRAM: GROUND-WATER STUDIES: MAJOR AQUIFER STUDIESMAJOR
AQUIFER STUDY 3: SAND AND GRAVEL AQUIFERS Major aquifer study 3 (MAS 3) is a 30-well network in unconsolidated, surficial aquifers (also termed sand and gravel or stratified-drift aquifers) in the NECB Study Unit. The study area includes both unconfined and confined aquifer areas in valley lowlands and coastal areas, with the exclusion of the southeastern coastal region (Cape Cod and the offshore islands of Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket). The 30 wells were randomly selected from a database of gravel-packed wells used to supply municipal water (Scott, 1990). The wells were sampled during the summer and fall of 2001.
