In 2000, real-time precipitation gages were installed
in Vermont by the USGS, in cooperation with the Two Rivers-Ottauquechee
Regional Commission. These gages were funded through FEMA's Project
Impact Program and will transmit real-time data through satellites.
The data will be used by the National Weather Service (NWS) and
State and local agencies to issue flood warnings. The precipitation
gages are co-located with USGS stream-gaging stations and data
from them can be used to develop models for flood forecasting.
Real-time rain gages are now installed on 14 stream-gaging
stations in New Hampshire and Vermont, with plans to install an
additional 12 rain gages in New Hampshire in the summer of 2001.
