Contoocook River Streamflow-Gaging Station

Why Does the USGS Collect Streamflow Data?

The USGS monitors the quantity of water in many of New Hampshire and Vermont rivers, streams, lakes, and reservoirs as part of a cooperative effort between Federal, State, and local agencies. The streamflow information serves many purposes:

  • Flood and drought forecasts
  • Dam control and hydropower gene
  • Water supply and treatment facilities
  • Bridge and culvert design
  • Water quality monitoring
  • Land use and climate change effects
  • Kayaking, canoeing, and fishing conditions
