More than 7 inches of rainfall during the period from June 13-17,
1998 in eastern and southern New Hampshire has swollen many rivers
and streams causing flooding primarily in the Saco, and Piscataqua
River Basins.
Within the southern portion of the Saco River Basin, the USGS
gage on the Bear Camp River at South Tamworth, NH, recorded a stage
of 9.6 feet and a discharge of approximately 6,000 cubic feet per
second (cfs) at approximately midday on June 14. This peak was in
excess of the 50-year flood. In the northern sections of the Saco
River Basin, the Saco River near Conway, NH gage recorded a peak
stage of 14.6 feet in the evening of June 14 and the discharge exceeded
36,000 cubic feet per second (cfs). This discharge was greater than
the 10-year but less than the 25-year flood.
Within the Piscataqua River Basin, the Lamprey River near Newmarket,
NH gage recorded a peak stage of approximately 11.5 feet during
the day on June 15. The peak discharge was approximately 4,440 cubic
feet per second (cfs). This discharge approximated the 10-year flood.
The Oyster River near Durham, NH at a peak stage of 5.25 feet and
a peak discharge of 586 cubic feet per second (cfs) also equaled
the the 10-year flood.
Runoff in northcentral to northwestern New Hampshire was generally
less intense than in the Saco and Piscataqua Basins, with discharges
generally less than a 5-year flood.
In other drainage basins throughout New Hampshire and Vermont,
flows had generally less than a 2-year recurrence interval.
For more details on flood stages and discharges, see the table
below.
